Fortress wall |
The biggest stone in the walls of the Solovki fortress weighs some 11 tonns. Another megalith – 5,25 m long - is laid as a lintel over the Holy gates. Even now cyclopean masonry of the walls seems supernatural and is ever generating legends. One of them tells that the huge monoliths were sledged up the earth rampant being pulled upon the seals’ and belugas’ skins provided the thick layer of blubber. Another story tells about miraculous help of the founders of the monastery – St.Zosima, St.Sabbatius and St.Herman. |
