Canal at Solovki
In the mid-16-th century over 50 lakes on the Grand Solovki island were connected by the net of canals. Water was transported to the lake Svyatoye (Holy) and then pumped into the water-supply system in the monastery. Canals were also suitable for cargo delivery either by rowing boats or punting in the narrowest places. Most of the canals survived and water is still enough pure for drinking.
