Botanical garden at Makar’evskaya pustyn’, Grand Solovki Island, XIX c.
Makar’evskaya pustyn’
The natural beauty of Solovki is absolutely thrilling. You can get into a thick forests all covered with lichens or find some dwarf plants and so called “dancing trees” dramatically bent by cold northern winds. Botanical garden in the Hermitage of St. Makary (Makar’evskaya pustyn’) is an ultimate Eden somewhere 160 km from the Arctic Circle. Here in the heated greenhouses ripened melons and watermelons, which seemed another miracle to the pilgrims.
