There was one more type of non-elite art of the ÕVIII - ÕIÕ centuries, even more popular than the drawn lubok - religious painting and icon-painting. Even in the early icon-painting one could trace two trends - "scholastic" and "lower". The works representing the last trend are usually called "folk icons".
"It's well-known that the icons are mostly sold at the markets during the fairs, - regrets the reporter in the newspaper "Permskie Eparkhial'nye Vedomosti". - The icons are displayed right on the ground, along with jugs, pots, chariots, barrels, etc. [...] The icons at the market are badly painted, even ugly, but not cheaply sold".
