The albums became the quintessence of all kinds of home creative activities - drawing, music, and poetry.
By 1820-ies the albums became an indispensable object at every noble house. Philosophy of life of the certain class was expressed in them. For this reason 1820-1840-ies are often called the epoch of the album culture. There are many notes on this regard left by contemporaries. One of them, P.L.Yakovlev, a friend of Pushkin, a younger brother of his Lyceum-mate, permanent attendant of the literary saloons, who left his notes, drawings and cartoons in many of the home albums, wrote: "Every lady insists on having an album. In the streets, in the cabinets, in the bedrooms you could find the albums... Locked in the purses, they travel with their owners everywhere just like the ABC-books in the school-bags."
