Panova Evdokiya Vasilievna. 1907-1997. Vologda region
Grew up in the peasants family, was skilful from childhood: embroidered, wove, laced. Liked to sing, knew a lot of songs. In 1972 after the tragic death of her 27-years-old son she came back to weaving desiring to hide from her grief. She worked out her own original technique, combining traditional weaving of rags with embroidering, so far she could move from ornamental patterns to figurative compositions. Her best works are figurative woven and embroidered pictures showing the peasants every-day life and feasts. Among her images - architectural monuments in Vologda region, Christian saints, literary characters, portraits of her close friends and relatives, landscapes. Panova worked without preliminary sketches, but occasionally used the photographs and reproductions as the basis for her compositions.
