"Red October" in the Red Square
State Historical Museum and Limited Society Moscow confectionery Factory
"Red October" are presenting an exhibition called "Red October" in the Red
Square. The exhibition is devoted to the 150-th Anniversary of Limited
Society Moscow confectionery Factory "Red October". Known all over the
country, the factory was founded in 1851 by F.T. Einem in Arbat street. In
spite of fierce competition struggle F.T. Einem managed to attract the
Muscovites' attention to the great variety of his confectionery goods. In
1896 Einem Company won the highest reward and the right to place the image
of the Russian Empire State Emblem on its labels. There is a long-standing
friendship and cooperation between State Historical Museum and this
enterprise. The present jubilee exhibition is a result of their combined and
fruitful work. The exposition is based upon the comparison of the new and
the old ages. The visitor will see memorials of XIX and early XX centuries:
advertising posters and booklets, refined caskets and boxes for sweets of
last century. Side by side with memorials of XIX century best modern
factory's products are exhibited: lots of boxes and caskets, colored covers.
Well-known sweets, such as "Pigeon-toed Bear", "Chocolate Truffle",
"Swallow", caramel "Shrine Neck", chocolate "Golden Label", have come from
XIX to XXI century. While the exhibition is functioning, there will be a
tasting of confectionery goods of the Limited Society Moscow confectionery
Factory "Red October".

Devoted to 125-th Anniversary of Stephan Erzjia
State Tretyakov Art Gallery invites you to visit the exhibition "Stephan
Erzjia. Devoted to his 125-th Anniversary". There haven't been many
sculptors who in XX century gained such a great acknowledgement as Stephan
Nefiodov known in the world under the pseudonym of Erzjia (1876 - 1959). 40
works by their talented compatriot have been brought for demonstration in
the capital by the Museum of Fine Arts of Mordovia Republic by name of S.D.
Erzjia (MFAM), participant of the 12-th exhibition within the project
"Golden Map of Russia". Founded in 1960 in the town of Saransk, MFAM is
proud of the legendary sculptor's heritage. Son of a hereditary hauler from
the clan of "Erzjia", he had immortalized the name of this ethnic group of
Mordovia. His destiny had brought Erzjia to different ends of the Earth: he
started his career in Alatir, at the suburbs of Simbirsk, and in 1901 he
went to study in Moscow on the account of the money gathered by local
intellectuals. After he graduated from the School of painting, sculpture and
architecture he left for Italy. He lived through hardships and poverty
there, but he swore he would be a success. Still in 1909 he was the only one
to represent Russia at the International Arts Exhibition in Venice; in a
year he was applauded to at the International Exhibition in Nice and then in
Rome and Paris as well. In 1914 Erzjia returned to Russia where they called
him "Russian Rodehn". He worked in Novorossijsk and Batumi, Baku and Moscow,
creating portraits and monuments. In 1926 by the decision of State Education
Committee he was ordered abroad "for propaganda of Soviet art". The maestro
stayed in Argentine and became amazingly popular there, he discovered local
wood species as a material for his creative work. It was only in 1950 that
he the artist got Stalin's permission and was able to come back the USSR.
His first personal exhibition was held in 1954 in Kuznetsky Most street. In
his declining years, being back home after his long emigration, the master
donated more than 200 of his works to the state. Most of them are now kept
in Saransk and only two are in the Tretyakov Gallery. The present exhibition
is being held from September, 18 up to October, 14, 2001.

Father Mickhail's Collective Farm
The Museum and Social Center by name of Andrey Sakharov is presenting a
photo exhibition by Pavel Gorshkhov "Father Mickhail's Collective Farm". The
theme of the exhibition can be defined as the image of positive hero in
modern Russian village or a view of a townsman upon nowadays' country life.
About a year ago Pavel Gorshkhov, press photographer of the "Itogi"
magazine, still existing then, went to a village of Belgorod region to make
a photo-report "Scholl and Church". During his trip he met a person whose
spiritual power and energy amazed and fascinated the photographer. That was
Mickhail Alexandrovich Patola, Director of joint collective farm of villages
of Gorki and Bogoslovka. Mickhail Patola turned out to be not only director,
but also a priest. He had served at the local church over 15 years and two
years before was elected Director of the collective farm: In the summer of
2001 Pavel Gorshkhov once more went to Belgorod region, made a photo-report
about Father Mickhail's collective farm and wrote down his talks with him
and his fellow-villagers. The exhibition will last until October, 19.

An exhibition devoted to children
The Russian Academy of Arts invites you to a photo exhibition "Inside
Grown-up Environment. Childhood in Russia". The exhibition is timed to a
special UNO General Assembly session in children's interests. The exposition
includes over 100 works of Russian and foreign professional photographers.
Children have also taken part in the exhibition; they are pupils of the
Children's Home of Arts of Petrograd district (Petersbourg). There are 5
special sections in the exposition: "Children and Conflicts", "Children and
Family", "Children and Law", "Children and Health", "Children and Future".
The exhibition's organizers hope that their "visual document of social
importance" will attract everyone's attention to the everyday life of
children who need special attitude and care.

Solving problems with the help of window sashes
Museum center of the Russian State Humanitarian University invites you to
visit the exhibition "Li San-Bok. Modern interpretation of traditional
Korean window sash". The series of works by South-Korean artist Li San-Bok
is devoted to creative comprehension of traditional Korean window sash
motives by means of computer technologies. In ancient times the life of the
Korean woman was limited to her house which was illuminated through lattice
windows pasted with paper. Simple geometrical motives embodying the core of
national aesthetics used to dominate in the windows' ornament. Li San-Bok is
demonstrating 30 variants of original interpretation of ancient geometrical
motives made within the bounds of traditional colors at her exhibition. The
potential of computer graphics is used to reveal the effect of saturation of
the tone with color which is characteristic of wall paper. The artist does
her best to work out reference patterns of national ornament for industrial
design which always take into consideration the love of the Koreans for
checked tracery in the design of the interior. The exhibition will last
until September, 21, 2001.

An exhibition of Georgy Lichovid in the Central Artists' House
The Central Artists' House invites you to visit the exhibition "Her Majesty
Enamel" by Georgy Lichovid (hot enamels and painting, the city of
Volgodonsk). The exhibition will be open up to September, 30 in hall No 11.
Georgy Lichovid has created a flexible and manifold inner world, wonderfully
rich in variety of moods, nuances of emotions, spiritual states and
different sorts of contacts with the surroundings, e.g. people, ideas,
things, natural forms. The author's amazing creative energy lets him extend
the range of interests all the time; he has become enthusiastic about hot
enamels lately. Having first mastered this complicated technique at the
International Symposium of Art Center "Emalis" in 1999 in the city of
Jaroslavl, he went on studying it at the Enamel-making center in Mineranije
Vody (2000) and then at the International Symposium in Kechkemet (Hungary,
2001), he is submitting his works for the judgment of Russian audience for
the first time. Spontaneous forces of fire in the creative world of the
artist born under the badge of Fire, the Ram, and also probably the heritage
of his grand-father, a black-smith, had helped this new hobby suppress all
the rest artist's interests and encouraged him to all the deeper learning
and mastering this ancient and mysterious technique.

Exhibition of Old Belief published books
State Public Historical Library of Russia is demonstrating an exhibition of
book artwork which started on September, 14, and will last up to October, 5
and is called "By Ancient Piety". Old Belief editions of XVII - XXI
centuries from the depositories of the Museum are presented here. The
exhibition has been timed to the Church New Era, e.g. the beginning of 7510
from Adam. Old Belief published books of the period of 3,5 centuries, that
is from the middle of XVII century up to production of Old Belief
publishing-houses of 2001 will be first shown to the visitors of this book
artwork exhibition. The oldest edition exposed is "The Book of Faith"
published in 1648 and telling of theological and dogmatic basis of "Old
Faith". Of special interest are certainly editions of XIX century published
abroad and secretly brought to Russia, the so called "self-publish" which
are presented at the exhibition; they were printed by hectograph. Some of
the exhibits are unique. The exhibition brings one in touch with "living
history" through books, objects of Old Belief culture and contacts with
representatives of "Old Faith" who will be on duty at the exhibition.

Masterpieces of the World's Museums in the Hermitage. Al-Greco
September, 18, 2001, was the opening-day of an exhibition of the series
"Masterpieces of the World's Museums in the Hermitage". Two pictures by
Al-Greco are presented here: "Herdsmen's Worship" and "Christening" (Palazzo
Barberini, Rome) which are sketches of the two main scenes of the main panel
of Collegiums Donja Maria de Aragon's Church in Madrid. The artist had been
working at them since 1596 up to 1601. The sketches are manifestation of the
artist's latest style, with its typical mystic atmosphere and multiciphered
symbolism. There are two works by Al-Greco of early and mature Spanish
periods in the Hermitage: "Portrait of the Poet Alonzo Ersilja ji Sunjiga"
(about 1577) and "Apostles Peter and Paul" (1587 - 1592). "Herdsmen's
Worship" and "Christening" demonstrate the master's latest style which
hasn't got analogies in the Hermitage, and it has defined the choice of the
pictures for the exhibition. The exhibition of Al-Greco's pictures has been
arranged within the bounds of the agreement of works of art exchange between
the National Gallery of Old Art in Rome (Palazzo Barberini) and the
Hermitage. The exhibition will last until November, 18. 2001.

Pastels by Artists of Western Europe
The exhibition "Pastels by Artists of Western Europe of XVIII - XX Centuries
in the Hermitage Collection" was opened on September, 18, 2001, in the
Twelve-Column Hall of New Hermitage. The exhibition includes 65 works by
French, German, Swedish, Norwegian and Italian masters of XVIII - XX
centuries who had worked in the pastel technique, among them: Rozalba
Karrijera (1675 - 1757), Morris Canten de Latur (1704 - 1788), Gustaf
Lundberg (1695 - 1786), Edward Mane (1832 - 1883), Max Libermann (1847 -
1935), Edgar Degas (1834 - 1917), Pierre August Renoir (1841 - 1919), Pablo
Picasso (1881 - 1973). The last big pastel exhibition was held in the State
Hermitage 30 years ago. The choice of works for the present exhibition had
had its purpose to show not only special masterpieces, but also to
demonstrate a kind of common image of the Hermitage collection, of technique
and style evolution in pastel painting that had taken place in the history
of art. The exhibition will last until January, 13, 2002.

The Third Biennial "Peterbourg Museum Restorers"
Since September, 18, up to October, 18, 2001, the Russian Ethnography Museum
and the Petersburg Art Center "AVIT" invite visitors to the Third Biennial
"Peterbourg Museum Restorers". The task of the Biennial "Peterbourg Museum
Restorers" is to draw public attention to the best art restorers of various
museums in our city once in two years, to exhibit art and historic monuments
revived by the efforts of restorers, to show the audience unique restoration
methods of various materials. The Biennial "Peterbourg Museum Restorers" of
2001 is devoted to a special theme, that is restoring textile. It is the
opening of a whole series of particularized biennials which will let one
understand a lot of professional problems on the basis of a special
material. The Biennial has been organized not only to exhibit restored
memorials, it also invites particular specialists to discuss problems of
saving, restoring and conservation of museum exhibits. Petersburg museums
are taking part in the exhibition and some items from private collections
are used here as well.

"Phototrops" in the Museum of Anna Akhmatova
On September, 28, the exhibition of Marcus Kountze (Germany) called
"Phototrops" will be open in the Museum of Anna Akhmatova in the Fountain
House. His love of Russian poetry, performances of plays after Vladimir
Nabokov and Alexander Pushkin in Germany under the guidance of Yuri Vasiliev
have put before Marcus Kountze the problem of translating poetic image into
another language. Soon after that this "other" language became for him not
simply a different ethnic and verbal language. Marcus started translating
poetic images into visual language. In July of 1999 he first took part in a
photo exhibition, at the "Arena-99" festival in Erlangen; his works were
theatrical photo-objects. At the same time he started his activities at the
German and Russian television, where peculiar properties of the genre
combine acting with the art of frame design. All these have reinforced
Marcus's old love for photography. In contrast to his actor's work, this
kind of activities is kept back from the sight of the public. The more
remarkable is the fact that Marcus Kountze's personal photo exhibition is
being held just in the year when he is graduating from Theatrical Academy.
The exhibition will last until October, 21.

Artists' Peculiar "Petersburg View"
The exhibition "Petersburg Optics" will last in the Marble Palace up to
October, 3, 2001. The exposition includes over 300 works of art (painting,
scenography, photography) by modern Petersburg artists: Vladimir Zagonek,
Edward Kochergin, Vladimir Nikitin, Alexander Sovlachkhov, and also photos
by Alfred Eberling made in early XX century. The artists whose works are
presented here are quite different in nearly all respects. Their times and
spaces differ, they have got no common external features of hobbies, but
they have got a special secret alliance of views. With all that variety of
techniques, manners, opinions and spheres of creative work they have been
brought close to each other by their peculiar "Petersburg View". At the
exhibition one can also see fragments of design of his performances which
attach the impression of a theatrical action to the exhibition. They are
landscapes of Petersburg and Venice and even a complex and reserved realm of
the artist's workshop. Among the exhibits there are 30 photos made by a
simple handy camera in Petersburg, early XX century.

"Secrets of Underwater Realm" in the town of Kostroma
An unusual exhibition under the name of "Secrets of Underwater Realm" has
been opened in the exhibition hall of the Museum of "Ipatiev Monastery". Its
organizers had been collecting the exposition for more than 20 years. The
exhibition is only a part of a great project called "The Planet of
Miracles". On the stands one can see strange sea clam-shells, queer corals
and short comments about them. Probably, the most interesting exhibit is the
"Neptune Bowl" made several years ago by masters of Kirov. Its main part is
"Nautilus clam-shell". There are purple snails from which ancient people had
gained red paint, poisonous cones, mollusks, scorpions and spiders, kauri
which had saved one from disaster and served our forefathers as shallow
change. At the hall entrance a small fountain is erected and visitors
through coins into it, as if leaving the sea coast for a far journey and
hoping to come back once again.
